I realize the beach or mountains would be a 'trip' of a few hrs that you'd plan out, what do you do on a nice summer weekend around home with the kids? any pools to go to? I don't think there are many lakes..what do you do? any free concerts in parks?

We've got lakes...Falls, Kerr, Jordan....and public pools and many subdivisions have their own.

Yes, plenty of free concerts around...Rock to blue-grass to some classical. Art walks, fun runs,.....you name it.

Read the board....or post on what you enjoy doing and someone will know of an event to take part it.

Really....do you think we all do nothing but sit around until our next trip to another part of the state?

haha no I didn't think that at all, we live by the water up here right now and it was such a nice weekend finished up with a free concert at a local beach, such a nice atmosphere, no doubt in my mind NC has the same good feel places I can't wait to discover them

How do you spend your summers in your area?

Well from a strickly calendar standpoint we spend our summers from June 21 to September 22. What we push, cram, slam, kick, stroke, ski, jump, tan, drive, fly, cast, jet, skim, walk, trot, run, see, bike, and fire in that period is anyone's guess!

But being it is a limited time you know we try to maximize our time to push, cram, slam, kick, stroke, ski, jump, tan, drive, fly, cast, jet, skim, walk, trot, run, bike, see, and fire EVERY chance we get!

We joined a swim club, so we spend quite a bit of time there in the summer.

Funny...I was going to say we spend time on the lake on our boat! There are nice lakes all around and very close! We spend lots of time at the pools too.

Eno River, Cole Mill access and West Point, for hikes, car-camping, canoe, kayak, swim, fish; Kerr Lake, specifically Satterwhite Point, is beautiful, has camping, fishing, boat access, trails, swim designated areas, etc. and has many summer events/activities; Summer series at American Tobacco District, Durham; many bluegrass, country, and rock festivals in Durham, Wake, Chatham, Granville, etc counties; outdoor concert series in Cary, Raleigh, Chapel Hill; love the smaller venue performances at Moore Square, Cat's Cradle, Lincoln Theater, The Pour House, etc.; Walnut Creek Amphitheater; RBC Center; Durham Parks such as Forest Hills, with playgrounds, large fields, trails, picnic areas, Durham resident access pool; Sarah P. Duke Garden; Museum of Life and Science (beautiful!); Raleigh's Rec. Parks; Umstead Park is huge, holds many events, great for hikes. Just tap into each community's websites, recreational park sites, arts/events sites, and check the calendars
