Does anyone know what the limitations are for livestock in the Durham city limits? If I buy a 1.5 acre lot not in a subdivision can I have livestock? What are the limitations, (i.e. so many per acre, certain types not allowed)? Are their any special allowances for miniature livestock?

I believe it must be zoned for agricultural use in order to have livestock. It also would depend on the restrictive covenants on the property itself. I would call the Durham Planning department and also check the filings on the specific property.

I called the planning dept. There was 'no one there to take my call.' We'll see if they call me back.

Have you been to the Durham Zoning Atlas to see what the land is zoned?

Durham, NC - City of Medicine

Residential Rural and Residential Suburban zoning does allow for livestock, or at least the zoning codes mention that you can have pens for livestock as long as the setback is at least 50 ft from property lines. Of course covenants and HOAs would give further restrictions, but you did say it wasn't in a subdivision.

Otherwise it appears to be on an as-permitted basis for non-commercial use. See this Ordinance:

Durham, NC - City of Medicine

They spell out details for chickens (up to 10, no roosters, per lot) but not for other animals, beyond general rules for sanitation, smell can't cross your property boundary, etc. So you would need to go through planning for the Limited Agricultural Use permit, and I'm guessing they have additional guidelines.

I talked to the city planners. Basically, the property has to be zoned one of two designations that allow you to have livestock. If the property is zoned appropriately, any structures for the livestock must be built at least 50 feet from the property line. So it pretty much varies by property.
