Avoid Wake Forest if you'll be working in Raleigh. The drive seems tough - lots of bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic along Capital Blvd. Probably going to get worse. We live in WF and love it. Great place to raise kids. But I work from home, and my wife is now looking for a job nearby.
Ok, I never thought I would say this but, North Raleigh. I'm a local from a suburb town and Raleigh was always this other place you visited when you wanted to do something - all hurried and bustling.
Somehow my husband convinced me to come and look. We found a wonderful neighborhood in N. Ral., 4br on a 1/2 acre lot. The park-like environment is incredible, good school system, and we are 20 minutes from 3 malls, 50 restaurants, downtown, and RTP.
I thought the suburban childhood was perfect. But we didn't take advantage of the museums, theaters, and other cultural and community enrichments the city offers. Now we do..
Desdemona123, I've heard from other posters that they liked North Raleigh. I'm not sure if there are different parts of N. Raleigh or if it's all over. We haven't gotten jobs yet, because we won't be moving until next year. We're coming out next month for the first time and will ask a realtor to take us around to look at houses for a day. I wanted to be able to focus on one area and look here and there at the others.
N.Raleigh
Brookhaven - big lots, hard to find in your price range but worth the look, zipcode: 27612 west of creedmore, north of glenwood
Quail Corners - .3-.6 acre lots, a number of homes would be in your price range, zipcode: 27609 north located at millbrook rd/falls of the neuse/spring forest rd

We're in the final stages of purchasing a house in North Raleigh and so obviously I'm biased big time.
On Long Island the neighborhood most comparable to where we're buying is so exclusive that if you're car costs less than $40k the locals know you're just visiting. I still can't believe we're going to be living in such a wonderful place. We're literally counting the days until we move.
I'd spend $150K on a house in north Raleigh, live more comfortably with the smaller house payments, and either send the kids to private school with the surplus or homeschool them.
I know the real estate agents are going to twitch but I don't see the point in spending $250K+ on a house in Wake County.

Eww that sounds horrid.
