Fall is definitely the best time to plant anything. Spring is the worst because newly planted things have to deal with drought and heat and try to get established root system too. So plant your hollies and everything else from now until january or maybe even feb but don't plant in spring when everybody else is thinking they are doing it right. If you get it in the ground before spring, it might not actually show new growth but it will be ready for that new growth by being planted in the cooler months. Professional nursey people have been terying to get this message out for years but folks still respond to those first warm spring days by rushing out to buy new plant material.

I had great results when I had lanscaping done in November - and this was in Virginia where winters were quite cold and snowy. I'm hoping to get some trees put in during October - but I need to get a move on with picking a company to work with!

I've always planted in the fall and agree that this is the best time as well. Also nice and cool for digging those holes! I've planted potted plants throughout the year and have had no problems though.
