I just had my deck rebuilt and a screened porch added. The contractor who did the work was booked 6-8 weeks out. I'm having a bit of lanscaping done this week, and need to get the house painted sooner rather than later. After that, just minor things for a couple years!
I also just had a deck added to the side of my house, as well as a small shed built. And had some rooms painted-again. I can't seem to make up my mind what colors I want! I think this time I'm happy.
I'm re tileing 2 of my bathrooms and taking the door off my master shower to make it a walk in shower. Also, while the tile guys are here, I'm having them add a backsplash in my kitchen.
I would love to downsize in a few years but it seems that hubby and my kids (even the ones that are on their own) don't want to sell the house!
I believe that with the housing market being what it is, that more and more builders are going to see that the majority of us do not want homes that are 4,000 square feet. I'm HOPING and EXPECTING that we'll see more builders building smaller homes (1800 sq. ft. to 2600 sq. ft.) with all the bells and whistles and when they do, I'm going to be one of the first to buy!
We moved to the area last year and have a multi-year remodel/updating plan. Within the past 12 months we have removed wallpaper, painted, re-carpeted, added doors and decorative trim, and recessed cans and new ceiling fans to the inside. Outside, we needed some rotton wood replace and one thing led to another and we got rotten wood corner boards replaced with non rotting material, new exterior door, caulking, sealing, house painting, new porch lighting/ceiling fans, etc.
we still need to update the kitchen, master bath and guest bath to suit our tastes. Like add granite, get rid of shiny brass, etc. There's nothing really wrong with them. Our yard needs landscape renovation help. The property is 11 years old and a little overgrown to suit my tastes. I'm getting pricing on these three things now (kitchen, bath, landscape) and we'll prioritize and budget to do the work over the next couple of years.

I hear you. It seems as though the inept and less desirable contractors didn't make it and what's left are the good ones and they are booked. I want to get some landscaping quotes and everyone is too booked to come talk to me.
I've done my fair share to boost the economy. 2007: new roof. 2009: replaced all the masonite siding, painted house, new shutters, new gutters, new lights & spotlights, new deck, powerwashed house & walkways/driveway, took down 6 trees last week, new interior decor in LR. Next year: some landscaping.
