A while back there was a thread on where to get a tortilla press, and there are regular threads on where to get the best authentic food. The first thread got me inspired, and my history as a chef in Mexican and Southwestern places (80's to mid-90's, it's been a while) finally broke free today.
I started in the morning with crock pot full of beef until it was falling off the bone tasty. All the fat left in, heavy on the spices, and similar to some of the shredded beef you can get at better places. Then I made a big-a$$ pot of pinto beans, and as they were finishing up I busted out the tortilla press and made a dozen and a half fresh corn tortillas.
To be honest, it was very good, but not as good as some of the best places available, BUT (!!!) it was equally as satisfying, if not more.
I think the highlight was that I went for a bike ride for about an hour while it was all cooking. When I came back in the house, the kind scents almost knocked me over.
My DH has done this too...learning to make my favorite, Chili Verde. My daughter loves it too! I really want to try to make tortillas...I did it as a kid...all by hand. I remember them being so delicious!
My wife and I went back to Dallas for Thanksgiving. We were surprised to find a little hispanic woman feeding balls of dough into a tortilla oven right in the bakery section of the local grocery store.
Yum! Inspired by all this talk, my kids & I just made home made tortillas for the first time....we all had a great time & they taste pretty darn good!
