I hope to be retired from the Department of Corrections in Florida in 1 1/2 years and living in Rapid City area. I know I will get bored, so I plan to work somewhere after I ride my motorcyle around for awhile. I work in education in a prison setting, and did work in mental health here also. For over twenty years I was a child protective investigator which I loved working with families. Question: Which has the most possibilites for employment- social work or education in the Rapid City area? I am flexible in either area. I have seen every cruel thing that adults can possibly do to a child, so I am experienced. Thanks.

Rapid City is in desperate need of great teachers, as is everywhere else, but being so close to the reservations yo may want to check into social work. There are cases of neglect, abuse, and god knows what else that happens on the reservations AND in the Rapid City area. I am sure they will need your experience and help.

Another member of the forum is a social worker too. BusySocialWorker is her name (how obvious) and hopefully she can come along and tell you which direction is best!

Thanks for your help. I love working with children, and just maybe, once in a great while you actually help a child and the family. I guess I like it because I am a child at heart.

With your experience, you could probably work for the STAR Academy near Custer. Custer is about 45 minutes south of Rapid City in the Central Hills. You'd technically be a state employee, so your pay & benefits would be stable. You can view a current listings here ... BOP Web (http://www.state.sd.us/applications/pr47jobs/home.htm - broken link) ...

Mama, that's an excellent suggestion. Another one is to check with Pennington Co. to see if they need any jailers. They're paid fairly well and they also have excellent benies.
