This wheelchair ramp came with my home when I purchased it. Although it occasionally comes in handy for moving heavy items, I really don't use it much and am tired of mowing around it, and am considering removing it. However, I don't want to remove something that might add to the property value when it comes time to sell. Does anyone know if handicap access adds to the value of a home, or is this negligible?
It looks like a handyman special if I ever saw one, it probably is a building code violation and your neighbors should report you to the city. Tear that thing down and have a professional acquire permits and build it properly.
The house looks great. The ramp...does it get inspected by anyone? Maybe if outside funding was involved in installing it. At any rate, it can be handy since your steps are so high.
Is it stable?
Personally, if I didn't need it permanently, I would get all the moving in and out of anything it would be helpful with (appliance switch out for example) and then take it down. In the meantime I would be concerned to let a contractor haul anything that way in this lawsuit happy time.
It really does not add value unless you plan to market to people in wheelchairs and soon, otherwise it's an eyesore, and like you said in the way for mowing, etc. At least paint it if you plan on keeping it.
and I hope this is your backyard and not your front yard.
Remove it asap - it is a hazard and a liability, not a value added feature.
