Do you make this at home? We use a pork loin wrapped in pork belly and pretty much follow this recipe, except we use lemon zest instead of the orange.

It is great as a main dish and makes really good sandwiches.

Dang, you brought back some great memories of my time spent in Italy. Porchetta was one of the best things I had there.

As many times as I've been to Italy (both work and vaca), I never had it until we prepared it at home.

In Italy it's sold mostly out of food stands, and it's considered a street food. People who don't care for this type of food might never see it anywhere else.

If you're lucky enough to live in Pittsburgh, you can have Porchetta in a (HUGE) sandwich for lunch ($10), or as a dinner item ($19), at DiAnoia's.

That's how I remember it as well. It's basically pulled pork Italian style and it was always purchased from a street vendor and never made at home, probably because Italians, at least then, never ate large amounts of meat. You just purchased a small serving of it by itself which was cut directly from a large piece of pork, and I never considered it anything other than a delicious snack while I was out and about in town. It was never made into a sandwich but I certainly wouldn't mind a sandwich with porchetta.
I think the recipe might vary from region to region. I don't remember any anise in it but then again, where I lived, Italians didn't use anise, not even in sausages. When my mother buys Italian sausage at the store, she takes all the anise out of it, LOL.

Go for it! It freezes well. It also is great as a pizza topping!
