My "retirement" job - I'm the managing partner of a strip club.
I didn't know you owned a strip club. For some reason I thought you worked the door or something. I'm curious about what happens to sex workers (in the US) when they're too old to keep doing it. I can't find any kind of study thus far.

See his last post to me. Apparently they end up as adult toy designers and film editors... no skills beyond th ability to disrobe on cue are needed for such a career path.
I have a question SifuPhil since you're an owner of a strip club. Do you charge stage fees? Do you offer health insurance? Are they contract workers, or are they considered F/T hires where you're paying workman's comp and the like? How about if they get laid off or if they're not making a living wage; are they eligible for UI?

I have a buddy in the film industry (non porn) and it's so tough to get in. He has a film degree and worked as a boom operator for almost 20 years before he was able to get into producing. Very tough racket. Further, there's going to be a huge gap on a person's resume if they're a stripper for a long period of time. It's not as if she would list the job nor would the job be of any use for transferable skills.

Oh, gee, I don't know WHAT they could do, besides of course advocacy work, scriptwriting, movie tech work, make-up, body modification, "house mother", public relations, book writing, blogging, columnist, manager, sex film consultant, talent scout, sex researcher, adult toy designer / manufacturer / salesperson, lingerie designer / manufacturer / salesperson, real estate baron / baroness, spokesperson for any of hundreds of pieces of merchandise from energy drinks to shoes, film-making, film editing, film titling, director, producer, webmaster/webmistress, adult club worker / manager / consultant, day trader...
Do you really believe they're as one-dimensional as some make them out to be?
I don't downplay their poor future simply because, as listed above (and I've by no means exhausted the list), they don't HAVE a poor future unless they're idiots to begin with, and in that case they'd fail no matter WHAT profession they get into.
Don't turn this into a man-hating / woman-hating thing, OK? - it's nothing of the sort. It's business. The smart, prepared ones prosper - the not-so-smart, unprepared ones end up destitute. That's how it's been throughout time for every business under the sun.
Wow. Stripping is very different than a SEX trade worker. I wouldn't even put them in the same category.
ETA: I mean IRT the physical/psychological effects between a stripper and a prostitute/porn actor.

On this point I do agree. These women should be encouraged to make back up plans.

And that's exactly my point. why would someone hire an aging stripper when they can hire someone fresh out of film school, a person who has been spending a few years cultivating film contacts while the stripper was grinding on a pole?
I don't have a problem with women doing it for a living, but I hate the fact that men who profit from it outright lie about ones prospects once the money dries up due to aging. At least give young women the truth so they can plan accordingly. the prime years to sell your body are the same prime years to begin a career (and are prime years to ind a husband.) sex workers don't do either and the merry go round stops at 30, tops. then what?

This is true. I love strippers and their pole dancing abilities. I would have no problem working as a stripper though I would probably lose my job - not a smart move. If the strip club provides enough security I see no probs with doing that for awhile. But pornos... I would not go there. Unless I was destitute, had no other skills, and have no kids and parents to explain my career to.....

I agree. It's in no way a career booster and suggesting anything professionally positive about it is simply dishonest. I think what he's doing and does is an attempt to reconcile his role as any of us might do when we engage in dubious practices. I use the term dubious here because a person that takes no issue with a behavior typically owns it full on. That rarely happens in sex work, tho- ime and from what I've read.
From what I've gathered, they can make anywhere from 150k to 200k a year. The males 40k a year.
I would think your sex life would suck as a porn star....?????
Though some of the female port stars you thin would be a little smarter than to sell themselves short on the camera...might be good money but there went your morals...unless you had none to start with.
Anyone ever known of someone who worked in porn? Did they report to enjoy it? or was it "just a job"?
Who are you to judge their morals?
And what is good morals?
Good morals to a christian might mean going to church, while for others it's bad morals because of the symbolic support of what the church have done to people in the past.(murders, inquisitions, burning people alive, pedofile priests etc)
