I had to watch a "diversity" video at work. One of the things in it was that women can get offended at being called "girls".

I don't understand it. I never mean it in a derogatory way, and by the way, I almost always say "women". If women call men "boys", I'm not offended at all. Is it just women with issues who get offended by being called "girls", or is it something a lot of women don't like?

I don't like the term and I only call several guys I know "boys."

I don't know if it's offensive or anything like that, but if you're calling grown women girls it probably reflects poorly on you. You would come off as young and immature.

Words only hold the weight you give them. I've seen some women around here get offended by "female." Very strange...

Not at all. O.O I find it bizarre that this is even an issue. "Girls" is such a youthful and sexy term. I'd want to be called a "girl" forever.

If you call me "madam" however... :P

Depends completely on the context as well.

Saying, hey is it girl's night to your wife (or your female friends) not a problem.

Calling your female colleague or boss a girl when talking about her work or position, not good.

I'm 49 years old, so maybe I'm out of date. Hard to keep up on the trends. My mom's a very independent woman and I respect that a lot, as I respect independence in anyone.

I always call women ladies.

If that bothers anyone, then poo on you!

Good post, thanks I won't admit to being naive or anything ... I think a lot of guys would wonder the same question if someone said it was an issue. I'm pretty easygoing myself, and I'm ok being classed with "men", "boys" or "guys". But when someone says "gentlemen", I wonder if that means me or not.
