I was talking with a coworker, and she mentioned living with her partner. When I hear partner, I think of same sex relationships. Only a few days later, I find out that partner is a man. Is this new? Something new with the political correctness crowd? Is it not 'cool' to use boyfriend or girlfriend?
In conversation, I will often use "partner" for the reason you mentioned. There's no gender involved, so it does a small part in denaturalizing heterocentrism, eliminating assumptions, etc. It's power-neutral.

The situation I referenced was a man and a woman, who used the term partner. I assumed she was with a woman when she mentioned partner. What assumption is eliminated?
Partner is usually associated with same sex relationships. Although same sex couples also use BF/GF.
If a date or guy I'm dating regularly, I usually just say, hi, this is my friend, fill in with his first name _______. My half century status, makes boyfriend sound so restupidous. If that intro isn't satisfactory then and they want more details, I say, hi, this is my man toy, my man candy, my spank the muffin boy, my ruffle the kitty kat flavor of the month.
Honestly, sometimes this one baffles me as much as the next person these days.

How old is she? I am 42 and dont know how to refer to my, um, guy because I think I am too damn old to say "boyfriend". If the coworker is 35 or over, that is probably why she said partner.
