Guy is in Indiana. He met girl in North Carolina about a year before he moved to Indiana for work. He came back to see her every month or two and they spend their whole time together. But he doesn't really want a serious committed relationship. So are they FWB? Will a guy travel that far to just hook up? What is going on here?
Sure. Some guys aren't picky about hook ups. Plus who's to say he doesn't have a woman close to where he already is. A guy can have more than one hook-up girl. So the NC one is just his NC hook-up. He may have an Indiana hook-up girl too. Variety is good for many, even if they travel for it.
Like a poster here. His ex girlfriend flew to Vegas-or somewhere- to sleep with some other guy, under the guise she was visiting her brother, who was there, but seeing him was a bonus, not the reason lol.
Another guy I know has a serious girlfriend. But he has a FB he sees every few weeks, when he feels like it.
Men have been known to travel father than that for a weekend with me.
Not sure why this is surprising.

Not me. I would not fly that far to just hook up with someone else unless I am really interested in him.
I would think their relationship is none of your business!
