Do fellow dudes agree. The reason we do not ask women in the workplace out is that there is a strong likelihood of an awkward situation in the office down the line.

I never dated anyone from work for just that reason. I easily could have, but didn't. I just wanted to go to work, do my work, and leave at the end of the day. Simple.

Yep. Took me (more than) a few times to figure it out, though.
Depends on where you work. If you work in store level retail or at a bar/restaurant, I would say that you should date your co-workers because they are often young and pretty. Tenures tend to be short in these industries. There might be a few other exceptions here and there. If you are at a job that you like and you plan on having any sort of longevity, then dating your co-workers isn't the best idea.
If you work in an office building or office park with other companies around, I think other people in the immediate vicinity at other companies are fair game. You might as well make the most of your time since you are at work so much. These approaches are generally a little easier than cold bar/nightclub approaches.
I've had numerous coworkers over the years that met each other at work and eventually married.
If life is about avoiding every potential awkward situation, you might as well not leave your house.
This risk of a negative outcome is much higher for men than women which is why I posed this thread to 'dudes.' Some women may even see being asked out as sexual harassment in the workplace.

Yup, people with more experience tell me it's not a good idea. I don't really want to find out for myself.
