My fiancé wants to move to Florida (to recapture his childhood...He lived there in the 1960s as a child). We have a 3-year-old boy and the schools in Florida (where we CAN afford to live) are awful. Where we live now (NE Indiana), all the schools within a 5-mile radius of our home are excellent with an "A" state rating. How can I convince my fiancé that moving to Florida solely for the perpetual warm weather is NOT in our son's best interest from an educational and social standpoint?

Tell him to go by himself if he can't think of what is in the best interest of your child. Once that baby came into your life, your dreams go to the wayside until the child-rearing is over.

There are several studies that show Florida near the bottom of the list when you are talking about public school quality in the US. Of course, Indiana doesn't exactly fare much better but start there. Also, Florida is not exactly a state with plentiful job opportunities either.

Where in NE Indiana are there good schools? I lived in Ft Wayne area and they are absolutely atrocious, and it shows.

Why don't you send him down there for a few weeks on vacation? Florida is not what it was in the 60's. Nothing is unless you already have a whole lot of money and can afford to live in pretend land.

I know a couple who split up after 60+ years of marriage because he was dead set on moving to Florida.

Default This is the OP speaking...

My fiancé and I had a discussion (he brought it up first) that it would be better for me and our son -- and I agree -- for me to wait until he is in Kindergarten for me to try to find work here and also that his education is paramount, that moving to Florida is just not practical. Glad my fiancé came to his senses...This tells me that he got his head out of the clouds.
