I have had multiple successes both hookup and relationship. Just don't message "Hi" be creative. My profile has just 2 crappy pictures. My "about me" has just 5 words. I say off the wall crap and send weird messages like I don't care what they think and I don't. Staying playful seems to work best. I try to her # as soon as possible.

"Hello" works in real life for me, I dont see why it wouldn't not work online. Shrugs.
