I saw this thread on the POF forums, and it was a woman that had asked about what others thought about being looked up online via Facebook and then contacting them that way, adding them. IN her case, all he needed was a first name and apparently she used the same photos on FB as she did on the dating site.

Surprisingly, many have said it was kind of a good idea or not completely unacceptable because even HR is doing it. (Human Resources ) or employers. Some thought it to be off-putting to a point where they've decided to stop corresponding with them. Some have said they may be even flattered to find out that they were interested enough to look them up.
That it's 2018, and that most of us are all "out there" online.
In fact, there was a double standard mention that it if a woman does it, it's quite acceptable and highly recommended.
Usually I start seeing some women I've seen in public where we'd shared mutual friends. Usually I use the mutual friends as a reason to make my approach. lol That is...if we share a good number of mutual friends.
I think FB has an algorithm that detects 2 people in the same proximity crossing paths and then plopping them into the, "People you may know" list. It's like social media has normalized getting strangers to befriend each other in a sense.
