I would say this scenario is MUCH more common. Whether it be the woman just gained a lot of weight and never lost it after pregnancy/marriage, or the dude just has no self confidence and he goes for whatever is available, or he just likes bigger girls (least common) I see this scenario quite more frequently than fat dude fit chick.
It happened to me. Fell in love with a skinny, fun girl and had a child. She never started losing weight, had another child, gained more weight, still never tried to lose it.

It would have been ideal to have figure out you weren't going to marry her sometime before the two kids.
My wife and I have taken turns in a variety of your defined models; sometimes she's been the thin one and I've been overweight, vice-versa, both overweight and both fit; she's still the same person to me, just with different dimensions. If you're with the right person, you're with the right person.
