There's an interesting story on CNN about a woman marring her SO so he could have health insurance. Do you know people who have done this and how did it all work out?
I know several. One woman was dying of cancer and she married a good friend so he could get her pension after she died. Another friend I know was gay and couldn't get benefits under his SO's plan. They worked out a deal with a lesbian couple and both partners got married to one of the lesbian women. It worked out well and they eventually decided to have children together.

It's stupid and a shame that gays and lesbians have to resort to this kind of manipulation of the system to get the same basic rights that heterosexual couples get. Until gays and lesbians are finally treated equally under law, I say they do what your friend did.
There is several that marry for Insurance Benifits but there is several that stay Unmarried so they can get Goverment Benifits such as College and Health Benifits.
Its called playing the System the same as Gays and Lesbians are trying to do by trying to make it Legal to be married.
For the last few years that I read them, almost all the companies in Forbes and Fortune's 100 best companies to work for included Domestic Partner Health Insurance as a benefit and I was suprised at how many and who did.
My GF was living with this guy for many years. He did not have insurance and needed surgery, so...they decided to get married.
They are still together.
Not only do people get married for benefits, but people often stay together (don't divorce when they want to) for the same reason. Especially in this economy. One spouse has benefits through their job and the other doesn't, add into the equation a "pre-existing" condition... who could blame them?
One of the things that mystifies many visitors to the U.S. is how many people here will engage in strategic behavior concerning relationship in order to access health insurance. It is a weird but logical offshoot of our byzantine health care system: relationships predicated upon insurance.
NOTE: I'm not trying to hijack this thread and turn it into a debate of health care policy, so anyone who wants to fight about that can just take it to the Politics forum.
At least its not one of those unfulfilled expectations that so many assume will occur once they marry.
Oh wait. There could be marriage fraud based on benefits! I'll get Cosmo on it right away!
