Anyone change a first name that no one knew you by? As an adult? For example, a friend recently tried to get a professional license which is now more restrictive. He is know in all circles as "Chip" - his legal first name is something he has never been known by and sounds quite formal and long.
His driver's license even has C M last name and does not have the first name spelled out due to it being so many letters. Now, he must provide more ID and this first name came up.
He wants to change it but has anyone done this? (Family name passed down).

No, but a few years ago, my father was looking into changing his last name to a family name somewhere way up (down?) the family tree... would have made things confusing for the rest of us!
I had to go to court to change my first name because my DL did not have that name on it.
If his driver's license has Chip on it then he can take that to social security administration and get a new SS card. Once he has DL and SS with his desired name, he can apply for a professional license with that name.
If his passport also has Chip on it, then it is a slam dunk easy change.
Driver's license has (initials) C M then the last name BUT social security card has the full name, passport has the full name - in those days, I guess if your name was too long, they just used the initials.
Now, he is updating his professional license and they want the whole name on it - this is going to cause some issues b/c everyone knows him as "Chip" - even credit cards are under that.
(Hmmm...I wonder how Bill Clinton got around all this!)
Ive changed my first and middle name. Actually my middle name is now my first name and I have another middle name.
