We have all heard of, and sometimes used this phrase to explain things that happen in nature.
A hurricane, flood, earthquake to name just a few.
What is the true origin of these happenings?
Scientist will tell you they are the "work" of nature.
If they are a work of nature, what is nature?
If they are indeed an act of God, did God purposely create them?
Some insurance companies cover loses by act of God, while others do not.
What do they use as a rule to determine what is, and isn't an act of God, and what proof do they have that a disaster is the work of nature, as opposed to an act of God?
One is left wondering is God nature, and if so, how and why would God create such havoc?
And finally who is this one we all call "Mother Nature?
Bob.
The word nature is derived from the Latin word natura, or "essential qualities, innate disposition", and in ancient times, literally meant "birth"
Nature just means the physical world. There is no *work or act* of nature really. Things happen because of the intrinsic qualities of our physical world.
Hurricanes, for example, form and intensify over oceanic regions. They require certain temperatures and the rotation of the earth.
Floods occur when there is too much rain in a short period of time especially if the ground is very dry and unable to absorb the water (often when we have had a drought) or when a high tide (caused by the pull of the moon's gravity on the earth)
becomes high enough to over top a low lying land area.
Earthquakes happen when two blocks of earth slip past each other.
There is no need to presume that there is a supernatural cause for any of these phenomena and *mother nature* is just another way of calling on a supernatural cause. Of course, another interpretation of *mother nature* is simply that we humans need to respect our planet if we want to survive.
Some insurance companies do not cover acts of God. To them I would guess an act of God is when the costs of whatever occurred are greater than what the insurance companies are capable of covering. A natural catastrophe would be something they can cover financially.

Ponder on that one for a bit. It will all come to you.

Study a bit. Depending on who you are it's either the work of Satan, God, Gaia, or simply how the earth works. The answer is up to you.
In the Bible from 1 Kings 19: 9-14 ..... There was a prophet called Elijah, who ran away from Israel because His life was threatened.... as from verse 11...and he said ``Go forth and stand on the mount Horeb, before the Lord , and there the Lord passed by, and a Great and Strong Wind rent the mountain, and brakes in pieces the rocks before the Lord , BUT THE LORD WAS NOT IN THE WIND, and after the wind an earthquake, BUT THE LORD WAS NOT IN THE EARTHQUAKE.....and after the earthquake a fire, BUT THE LORD WAS NOT IN THE FIRE, after the fire a still small voice..... and said `what are you doing here Elijah.... Then Elijah goes on to tell the Lord about His problem with Israel who is turning away from God ......... ... But here is example in the Bible were God is Not giving any act of God through the elements ......... Then there is in the bible from Matthew 8: 23-27......``Jesus had entered a ship , his disciples followed him...and there arose a great tempest in the sea, as the ship was covered with waves, but Jesus was asleep....and the disciples came to Jesus and woke Him saying , save us , we parish....and Jesus said `Why are you so fearful, you have little faith`... Then Jesus rose and REBUKED THE WINDS AND THE SEA, AND THERE WAS A GREAT CALM....But the men marveled, saying What manner of man is his that even the winds and the sea obey Him!....`` ,....... See here Also is a strong wind were the Lord is not a act of God , because why would Lord Jesus rebuke a act of God ? Jesus would never rebuke a act of God but would bless any act of God.....
Do insurance policies, etc., actually use the phrase "act of god"? Sounds like a easy lawsuit to win, for the burden of proof would be on the insurance company to actually prove that god existed and that he caused the particular event that damaged or destroyed your property.
Force Majeure is the legal term and it covers a lot more than just Acts of God
