CHRISTIAN MUSIC HALL OF SHAME - YouTube

I was watching the video above and I got a very chuckle, but I must confess, at the end of the day these people are more humans with all the frailties and short comings that plague us all (some far worse than others). I was wondering why is it that we (especially non-believers) can be so hard on these so-called “born again,” “saved” folks. When they “fall” we are often reminded by them and their defenders that they are just humans and that “we all make mistakes.” This is certainly true and I sure won’t deny and even while I might chuckle or sometimes mock, I too realize I am human and have my own issues and temptations that I have to keep at bay from time to time.

So I began to look at a comparison between celebs in the “world” and those who consider themselves “called,” “chosen” or “vessels of god.” I realized that the latter set themselves up for the greater ridicule because at some point in their climb to Christian celebrity (Gospel artist, televangelist, Republican, etc), they probably gave some glowing testimony about how Jesus saved them from this or that. Sometimes their testimony tells of a sordid past of drunkenness, drug binges, sex galore and other such things (these type of things seem to sell well in some circles of Christendom) with a claim that Jesus has saved them from all of these things making them brand new creatures as “old things have passed away and ALL things have become new.” Some of them even go as far as speaking out strongly against the very “sins” they once engaged in. Celebs in the “world” don’t make these proclamations and in some cases, certain behaviors are even expected and while some of their exploits might be shocking, it does not come off the same way as say, a news story that says Pat Robertson is secretly gay and wears pink thongs.

Why is that and what are your thoughts?

NOTE: Typed at work in a rush. Excuse typos and ragged thoughts.

I have a bit of an issue with this idea that celebrities or public are also supposed to be plaster saints. To me, if a politician is rogering his secretary red faced in the hospitality suit is a matter for him and his personal circle. If I have any issues, it solely will be whether he is doing a proper job.

At the same time, someone in the public eye should (rather like women in public) not be unaware of how the public will react and to say they shouldn't be noticed is unrealistic. The public don't need much excuse to indulge in pulling down the tin statue and jumping on it when the alpha breeding pair fail to be up to job any more (yes, I suspect that the public tearing down of Icons is also an evolved trait).

Finally (at last I get to the point) after that explanation, anyone who sets themselves up as a plaster saint has little sympathy from me if they are found out to be a grubby little schtick - figure. And Tartuffian exhibitions of public repentance only elicit my contempt.

You may quote me. Normal fees.

LOL....

I admit that this was not one of my better presentations. I was typing standing up, had employees interrupting me with work constantly (the nerve of these people!) and I had to keep going back and forth. I have no idea if I made any sense at all.

Anyway, I think matters are made worse when these people start pontificating so when caught with their pants down, so to speak, only their staunch supporters stick up for them sometimes to the point of ridiculous blind denial.

I thought your post was fine and I agree in essence. I was just musing in public as usual...it's a sort of net forum incontinence that comes with age since I seem to have been spared the other kind.

The below may speak to your point or may be only tangentially related.

I think anytime someone lifts themselves up as superior to the rest of us, many of us take satisfaction in seeing that person knocked off their pedestal and made even with the rest of us. Whether it is Charlie Sheen, or a person who claims they have a special relationship with the most powerful being in the universe and the rest of us are going to suffer for eternity, many of us like to see the haughty and narcissistic put in their place. When they attempt to make themselves different from us and superior to us, they make it harder for us to have empathy for their misfortune.

Plus, many of us take issue with hypocrisy.

Note: I don't think much of what I just said applies to the "Jesus Is My Friend" ska singers in the video. I laugh at the video because the music is so unexpected and kind of has a silly rhythm to it. My post was more of a response to your commentary.
