I don't know if this is the right forum for this, but I'd thought it'd be interesting to think about this.

Dressing up for church used to be the norm in my area (Charleston, SC). It still was until just a few years ago. All the women and many girls wore dresses, and men and boys dressed up at least in nice slacks and a shirt, if not a jacket and tie.

Almost everybody did that. Now, its mainly older people and a few others. Maybe 1 out of every 4 families dress up for church now. You see lots of jeans, sneakers, and even some crocs.

How do people dress for church in your area?

I would say that mostly older people do. Younger ones, not so much.

In my church, everybody dresses up. I believe that the way we dress is a reflection of how much respect we feel for the God we go to worship. I'm not saying that dressing up for church should be like a fashion show; I'm saying that when we are dressed differently than we would be dressed to attend a sporting event or for a trip to the mall, it's one way that we show God that He is worthy of the best we have to offer.

I go to a huge church that has whatever you might be looking for. Clothes don't seem to be too important. We can have a person looking like they are in sweats sitting next to a person in spike heels and a real fur coat with an outfit on to match.

Things have definitely changed. Some families have trouble putting food on the table. I still like to wear my Sunday best, but really like it that it is not an issue where I go. Our church has a closet and a pantry. All families have people who are more well off than others and some need help. I think it is just normal for the church family to be the same way. I would hate for someone to be uncomfortable enough about their clothes to keep them home.

I definitely agree! I would hope that anyone would be welcome in my church, no matter how he or she was dressed.

June somehow has the definate feeling and opinion that if an atheist walked into ANY church on a Sunday morning (or any other day of the week for that matter) that God wouldn't care whether they were wearing their "Sunday best" or a pair of old, tattered jeans....

I grew up in a full gospel church for over 30 yrs. There were no slacks allowed for women, it was just an unwritten rule and often the women would refer to the scripture to highly suggest it. However if a woman walked in off the street, no one would be angry or offended, neither would we send her out. It wasn't that serious. The men wore suits and ties and even most senior high teens did as well. The younger kids wore nice slacks and shirts with the best shoes. I must say, it was a great church. Our pastor brought a great message week after week, year after year and soooo many souls accepted Christ.

I moved to a new church 10 years ago and this church is a come as you are church. Kind of the way God accepts us, just as we are. I use to think that you had to dress up to please God. But what about the man who seeks him and all he has is what he has on. My new church wants everyone to feel as if we are on the same level. Some people wear sneakers, some wear jeans and nice shirts and shoes, some wear jackets, but no one wears a tie and very few dresses are worn. I believe that God is looking at my heart and how I keep his word. On judgement day, I don't think casual attire will be what keeps us from entering heaven. Just my opinion.

Yesterday I was in church, and most of the people were just dressed in regular clothes. 1 in 4, maybe 30% of the people were dressed up. Out of all the kids in church, I maybe saw 5 or 7 dressed up.

There are more that dress up inland, and in churches like Baptist and Presbyterian.

I go to Friday night services sometimes (reform Jew here) and people still dress up for services here. They go beyond business casual...business formal is how I would describe it, or "Sunday best" in a context Christians might understand better.

Jeans, sneakers, etc. would be out of place. You wouldn't be asked to leave; it doesn't work that way; but you would definitely be dressed much more casually than the rest of the congregation!

The Catholic churches I have been to in NJ and Va. the dress is casual, a few still get dressed up.
Back in the 60's everybody got dressed up, there was even a sign at the entrance to my church saying women were not allowed in if they were wearing slacks.
Many of the women would wear mink stoles etc. to church, back then women had to wear head covering so hats were a big thing.
