Do you think this will continue over time? Or do you think it's just a blip on the chart and will reverse?

What do you make of this? Let's talk about it!

Quote:
A wide-ranging study on American religious life found that the percentage of Christians in the nation has declined and more people say they have no religion at all.

Fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990, according to the American Religious Identification Survey.

The link isn't a recent poll. The report is from 2009. That's 5 years ago.
A rise from 14.2 percent to 15 percent in 8 years is barely anything.

I'll be interested when someone comes along with a 2014 poll. I get the feeling there have been bigger changes recently. In the last 5 years there has been considerable controversy around the Catholic church for example, plus the internet is opening peoples eyes.

Is 2013 information close enough? Pew Research said last August that 1 in 5 Americans claim no particular religion.

Yes 20% sounds more realistic. I'd heard that somewhere recently.

I agree that around 20% sounds a bit more on.

It feels to me like there has been a movement in both directions away from the "middle" in terms of religious beliefs. That there are fewer people who casually associate with a particular religion, but do not hold to or practice it in a strict or rigid manner. Instead, they seem to be moving towards no longer associating at all, or closer to a more strict or rigid form of religious belief and worship.

Sure, why should religion be any different that everything else that people are losing ? Class, honesty, trustworthiness, and so much more are things of the past.

I can't envision the trend doing anything but growing - and quite rapidly. People today, especially the young, are too savvy to accept ancient answers to life's questions.

And a blind person can see how divisive religions are. The sooner we outgrow them, the sooner we'll come to realizing our potential as a species.

Poor countries = more believers.
Rich countries = less time to believe..

will it continue? of course.. .

Religion is the root of all evil? right? yep, that why ancient wars started in the first place.. hmm let go back to 911? was a religion act of cowardice, then what they got in return? war!

Why did we kil bin laden? because his religion beliefs was to kill the infidels? religion sucks, my opinion. I do respect all other religions and I usually Lie to believers on the street when they approach me and talk to me about going to church..

God does not go away whether religion is on the upswing or the downturn, polls don't make Him go away
