Why would a god whose purpose it is to love his children design flesh-eating viruses which invade their vital organs and kill them slowly and painfully?

God so loved the world that... VIruses aren't part of the world, just important to know about when creating anti-dotes. <stupid>
Umm... who said God created that? Look up Process theism some time, I'm familiar with it moreso and it would say that the virus exists because God is a creator in a universe with freedom (it is not a mechanism) and that includes the potential for pain and suffering. God didn't create the viruses to hurt people but the possibility was always there that the viruses would do so despite God's desires, since a universe with freedom means that not everything has to obey God's will since God is not a coercive force in the universe.
In addition, the traditional concept of the Fall in the Christian faith says that things like viruses exist because free creatures chose their own way in the past rather than choosing to obey God, as a result the universe was cursed, not because God designed them to be malevolent. There are many things in the world that are not necessarily part of God's design.
The last bit, God as a kindly grandfather, is ridiculous. It's anthropomorphism of the worst variety . God is not your life coach, your buddy, and definitely not your grandfather. He has no moral obligations to human beings (he has no duties to human beings but is nontheless loving); he is not a moral agent but he is the source from which all moral obligations arise.
- argumentam ad ignorantium: The Lord works in mysterious ways.
We can logically dismiss the last one above, it's not an explanation, but a surrender to ignorance.
Are you sure you've properly prepared yourself for the answer to your question (OP)? It could be that there is a perfectly good explanation, but you're simply not "holding' in a place where the answer could make sense to you.
