Who would like to discuss the wisdom of a (or some) religious principle(s).
This thread is NOT about trying to prove some 'fact' in the scriptures of any religion. The forum is filled with posts that try to do that.
And for the purposes of this thread, I'll use this definition of 'principle': "a basic generalization that is accepted as true and that can be used as a basis for reasoning or conduct". [vocabulary.com]

Almost 100 years old.
But Max Ehrmann, who was into the spiritual made a beautiful statement when he wrote: "You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

I view this as a spiritual principle.
I remember a top 40 song back in 1972 that used that statement. Very nice.
"Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us".
For me the operative word in the above is " as ". Not "if" or "when".
The " principle" of forgiveness has been a source of great relief, and freedom in my life.
Unforgiveness I find to be corrosive to my wellbeing.
( hopefully this is what you were looking for)
Yes, I think that's fine.
I'm not sure I see the difference between "as" and "if", however.
And I think one does need to define what forgiveness is. To me, it is not forgetting. For me it is -- I don't want anything bad to happen to that person because of their trespass, but it also doesn't mean erasing the trespass. And that kind of goes along with a Buddhist principle that we should be very selective as to who we include as our associates. And karma.
I've seen enough people with excruciating pain who are dying from cancer to know that they are not choosing to suffer.
it is not about definitions. it is not about semantics.
it is about understanding what is being expressed and the profound depth and practical application of that principle.
any principle of the type requested and invited in this thread topic, can be blithely dismissed by anyone with an inclination to do so.
