I recently asked my sisters boyfriend (a non-denominational Christian) if he takes his kids trick-or-treating. He told me "I'm not into that witchcraft stuff". Isn't Halloween a Christian holiday? How is telling ghost stories and dressing up in scary costumes "witchcraft" or "worshiping the devil"? And what do either of those things have to do with each other? This isn't the first time I've heard this argument, so why do some Christians have this view of Halloween?

This is a little similar to the conversation we're having about the Harry Potter books. I think certain religious people feel that there's a certain occult area that they should avoid. I'm an atheist so I don't think anything like that exists so I have a different opinion. I suppose some also think it's a sort of celebration of the occult. I suspect that's what their thinking is.

Because many folks are misinformed about the origin of the holiday.

You got it, MG! While Halloween does have some connection to "All Hallowed Eve" which celebrates the dead. (a religious "holday" if you will), I just don't like what it represents today. Yes, as it has been pointed out on this forum, many Christian holidays and traditions spring possibly from pagan roots and observances. But again, I look at what do they represent today in our culture. I think Halloween represents a glorification, so to speak of evil, of fear, of the macabre, and yes, of the occult. This isn't, of course, all it's about. I have no issue with kids dressing up and going out and getting candy. But I just don't think that's what most of the focus on Halloween is about.

According to a quick search I did, Halloween has both Celtic & Roman Catholic origins... so no, I don't understand why some Christians think it's "evil" witchcraft! Guess it's all the modern symbols we associate with it, like witch outfits, ghosts, goblins, and so forth. It also celebrated the dead, so that could make them a bit nervous - LOL.

I like the Mexican equivilent "Los Dias de los Muertos" my students have big parties with pinedas and candy, many of the Mexican people hang out at the grave side to remember their ancestors. Very touching.

The reason is because some wicca's do think that the veil between our world and the spirit world is less during Halloween and some practice rituals which are not scriptural...praying to the dead and such.

But just because others do that doesn't mean you cannot still celebrate Halloween and the harvest and all that. I would just add that it's important for Christians to glorify God no matter what they are doing.

Personally, we celebrate at church because now a days people do all kinds of terriable things to candy. So we dress up and have a big festival...tons of fun!

It represents fun today...its sad that some people have to make life so negative.

The most fun I have ever had with my daughter was when we stayed at the Dolphin Hotel at Disney and went to the Mickey's Not So Scarey Halloween party. My daughter was younger then and in full costume as Snow White. Disney had given out special maps with locations pointed out where people were giving out candy.

The park only allowed in a certain number of people so the rides were easy to get on, the parade was special as well. It started out with a headless horseman...it was a HUGE horse...I remember the sound of its hooves as it galloped over the wooden bridge and came into the area in front of the castle.

The people here in our area decorage almost as much for Halloween as they do for Christmas so we always take a ride around town to see what people have put out.

Sad so many people have to spoil what is a fun holiday for children.

I agree! When I was a kid, Halloween was simply about dressing up in fun costumes, getting candy, and hanging out with my friends... I didn't even know the origins, and honestly still don't (until I looked up those links, at least). Can't we just let them be KIDS for a night, and not worry about all the negative implications??

My daughter has always been very sensitive to visuals like that...she would have freaked out if she saw a giant headless horseman coming down the street!
