I was renting a room from my girlfriends sister. Well we didn't sign any lease agreement or speak with the actual landlord. We didn't pay any deposit or anything as it was a favor I guess you could say. We lived in a room, me, my girlfriend, two kids and a baby, as well as my dog, and paid month to month. We were told by her sister, the one letting us rent the room as a favor, that she wanted us out in a month because she was sick of us being there. So after receiving the text message we went looking for a new place. After finding a place a week later she tells us we need to pay to have the carpets cleaned and that we need to pay to have a window fixed that I had to go through to get into the place, because we did not receive any keys from her sister when we got there. Do I have any rights or am I screwed in paying for the repairs. Any and all advice will be appreciated since this is my first time having any issue with this kind of situation.

Well, I am guessing the carpet is dirty with that many people, and a dog, living in one room. And if you were using the window to enter and exit, I am guessing it does need repairs. If you caused the dirt and damage, man up and pay to clean up after yourself.

As for a lease...really doens't matter. You were paying rent, she was receiving it. It created a legal LL/tenant relationship. Contracts, especially in CA where I am, but also in many states, do not have to be in writing to be enforceable.

You need to clean the carpets and fix the sreen. Carpet cleaning for 1 room is very cheap. If you dont clean the carpet and fix the screen, then your girlfriend's sister is going to be stuck doing this. She already did you a favor, so why should she be penalized by having to clean up the carpet you dirtied and fix the screen that you broke?

You are not being sc.rewed. You are trying to sc.rew her. Don't. Why are to trying to weasle out of this?

So you state TWICE that she was doing you a favor. That implies that you were in a tough spot, and she stuck her neck out to help you out in a time of need.

And you repay her by damaging the apartment? AND looking for ways to weasel out of your responsibilities to make it right??

What a class act!

Pay the damages you and your family caused and be done with it. Why are you trying to screw somebody over? Man, all these new posters and their need to take advantage. geesh.

I'm sorry, you're "screwed" with paying repairs that you, your kids, or your dog caused? Are you saying that you can damage her property and she should just pay for it out of pocket?

Yes, you should pay for the damages.

It seems like you're the one that's trying to screw her.

Pay the damage and be grateful that someone let 5 people and a dog live in one room for any length of time. Your trying to get out of an obligqtion you owe. She did you a big favor. Show some gratitude.
