I haven't asked yet but plan to next week and was just wondering would a landlord provide something in writing stating that I was a tenant here for since 2006?
Just figured something like that would be helpful since I will be starting the apt hunt this week.
Would a landlord provide a tenant with something in writing before they move out as a reference?
Not if they have any sense.
Nor after the move out.

If you are on good terms with your LL then have a conversation about your plans.
If all is good then just be sure to get the LL's name and contact info right on the applications.

Why would that be a problem if the tenant was a good one?
It won't hurt to ask the LL for a reference, they got many years of a good tenant, I hope.
The townhouses where I lived for 7 years had a number of owner changes and the owners association decided that pets were no longer permitted. My LL had to give me notice and he gladly gave me a written reference which I think made it easier for me to get the next place, especially having pets.
I actually wrote just such a letter yesterday because the people are flying to the Mainland to look for a house this week. They have been some of the most perfect tenants I've ever met and that was WITH 2 cats and a dog. I will really miss these lovely folks. I've been in the house many times, I already know it's clean, will be thoroughly cleaned when they move out and so no problem helping them out a bit.
