I've been living in my apt for 2 yrs (& 2 mos). Of course when I moved in, everything was good, no leaks anywhere, etc. This morning, I was clearing some books out from a built-in shelf in the hallway & saw this black mold that has apparently been growing. Now, I'm extremely worried about the fumes I've been breathing in! I reported this to my leasing office immediately AND called them too to see if they can send someone right away...one of the maintenance people came within 25 min, in fact, she's here now & kind of tearing up the shelves.

Now, questions are popping up in my mind:

- Can I be transferred to another unit?...which would actually be really great with me!

- Can some money be given back to me on my rent I've been paying all this time?

Those are the major questions off the top of my head. I rent from a corporation, NOT a private landlord.

If anyone can give me other questions to ask to my leasing office OR just other comments/advice, please let me know, thank you!

Your LL is under no obligation, legal or otherwise, to either move you to another unit or to reimburse you for anything if you've suffered no damages. If your books suffered mold damage then you need to take this up with the company who underwrites your renter's insurance. You don't mention having been sick or having sought medical attention at any time.

Well, my maintenance person arrived within 25 min & the plumber arrived soon after & fixed a leak from a pipe behind the drywall that was slightly punctured when the built-in shelves were being built (says the maintenance person). She cleaned the area with bleach after the plumber did his thing & it's all good right now. Probably on Monday, the drywall will be installed. And hopefully, that should be it!

The maintenance person said it was mildew, so I hope that's all it was.

Thank God I haven't had any health symptoms of illness. So, this was too minor an issue to be put up in another apt unit or to get a portion of past rent back.

Get a portion of rent back?? For what? A little bit of mildew? Oh, my word.

As STT stated...if your personal belongings were damaged seek compensation from your renter's ins...not your landlord. You do have renter's ins right?
I suggest you Google mildew...it wont' make you sick and therefore you wouldn't have any symptoms of illness. I can't believe you even brought up being moved to another unit or having rent refunded.
