I just received the translation of my landlord's reference letter. I took it to be translated at the government notary so I could get all the official stamps and whatnot. I did not realize that they do a direct translation and do not attempt to put it into culturally appropriate language. Here is the result:
"Dearest and most respected landowner,
May you have happiness from your property. The learned and honorable Typhoidmary has lived in my apartment for 3 years. She is a very hot and welcoming person. Her rent was always paid on time and if she knew she would not be in Turkey at the end of a month she paid in advance. Her dogs are sugary and no problem. She paid cash so I did not have to pay taxes (I didn't know that was why she wanted cash! This is a cash economy mostly, so I figured rent was same). Her cat I never had the honor of meeting. Neighbors found her and her dogs pleasing. We will miss her like family.
May you have health, wealth and happiness,
Typhoidmary's Landlady"
Imagine getting this text with more fancy stamps and seals than a royal decree from a tenant? If I were a LL I would die laughing
A very hot and welcoming woman with sugary dogs... You're sure to get a lot of interest!
