I am enjoying the loss of weight, not so much the need to keep buying new jeans & slacks with a smaller waist, or all the comments such as "Have you seen a Doctor?" and "Are you OK?" (Affirmative to both).
Is this unexpected change common?
I remember that recent retirees always looked healthier six months after retirement than when they were still working.
I lost and have been maintaining a 35 lb weight loss since 4/2020. Either people have said nothing or told me I looked great. I haven’t had a single “are you sick?”

Usually it is: "You've lost weight! You look great! Have you been to a Doctor? Are you OK?"
You must have also retired from a job with more stress than you realized. At least that is what I think is my cause.

I'm down about 15-20 pounds since retirement and I wasn't overweight to begin with. It was all the office sweets that kept it on me. I'm a sucker for sugar.
I lost 18 pounds this summer and cut my cholesterol by 22 points by keeping a food diary and eliminating red meat. My calorie intake is 1500-1800 most days while I burn about 2200. I eat fish and chicken or just vegetables. I eat more fish than I ever have. It has not been a hardship at all. I’ve lost half of what I want to lose.

Some people think I've gone too far but I've improved every health number you can measure including BP, BMI, waist to height ratio, triglyceride/HDL ratio, A1C, resting heart rate, cholesterol, etc. My body fat is now 10.7% and muscle mass is 45%. Most of the people that have had negative comments are overweight and try to defend their obesity and swelled up gut as normal.
The fact is that America is very fat and unhealthy and most people don't even recognize that being in shape is healthier than lugging a fatty liver and gut around.
I lost weight a few years ago, but then I’ve gained it back. I don’t think my habits have changed, so I’m blaming it on a new medicine. Now I’ve switched to a different one, so I hope it helps reverse the excess tonnage.

I saw an old friend for the first time in a couple years and he'd lost a lot of weight. I jokingly asked if he was sick and he talked around it. He had brian cancer and died a few weeks later. I will never ask anyone again if they're sick.
I weighed about 250 lbs when I retired in 2011. I weigh 199 right now. I started a regimen of walking 5 to 6 miles everyday, I pick up trash as I walk so it serves a purpose. I am also an alcoholic in recovery. My last drink was August 24, 2020. I have no doubt that contributes to weight loss also. To top it all off, I feel a lot better then I use to.
I haven't retired yet, but have been I have been on a low carb diet for about a couple of years now, and have lost some fat. I need to get out and exercise more, have not been going to the gym due to COVID.
