Interesting poll. I am not eligible to vote because I am in fact retired, but I will be interested in the results, including how many people eventually vote. Since many people who post here are, like me, already retired, there may not be very many who are "unable to retire" (and hence eligible to vote), but I could be wrong. (No one has yet voted as of this writing).

Clarification: This thread and poll is open also to those expect they will not be able to retire at a normal retirement age...not just those who are at or near retirement age.

So far I'm the only poster who voted. Own home with mortgage. Age 50 now.

Goal is to retire before I hit 97. Currently have four kids (all girls), 12, 10, 8, 4 so that's four college educations, four weddings and my funeral.

Four girls? Did you also factor in the shot gun and rock salt to keep the hounds away?

I think what the OP meant about being 'unable to retire' are people like me who don't have enough in savings, 401k, IRA, SS etc. to be able to fully retire. I could be wrong.

Financially I am unable to fully retire and will have to work at least part time till who knows when. I rent now but, if I could find someone to work with me, I could afford a smallish mortgage. Right now I think my age is going to be against me because banks, etc. don't really like loaning money to people when they get older. I guess they are afraid we'll die or something.

Since the economy slid, we have been retired early, but unable to. We have our rental income to keep us in food. Our home we occupy and the rentals are all paid for which is a help. I just hope that this country gets going again before we die.

We don't fit the requirements for your poll, but FWIW we own a home and are also able to retire. Although we didn't buy our first house as an investment--and for the first decade or so it was a struggle to make the payments--as time passed that house turned out to be one of the best investments we ever made, and part of the reason we're now able to retire. Of course, luck plays a huge role--we're lucky to live in a community where houses sell, even in a recession. When we moved here, we weren't thinking about resale, so like I say we were lucky.

Perhaps they count on it. We were 63 and 61, respectively, when we purchased our home and our bank had no problem pre-approving us and providing our mortgage. Since it's a VA loan we didn't even need MPI.
