I know some people retire as early as their 50s and others of us work full or part time into our 80s, when did you decide it was time to retire and why?

I retired the first time a week after my 62nd birthday. I had been with the same company for several years and had moved up the ladder as far as I was going to move, I had the same position for about 5 years, it was in the process of being fazed out as a new computer system was about to be introduced that would have eliminated the need for my job. I decided, give it up, enjoy your life and collect SS. Well I lasted about a month and got bored, so I became a travel agent, only working part time. It was the perfect job for me, I had been in the hospitality industry for years, because our daughters worked for a major airline we had done a lot of travel, so my experience was an asset. I loved it, even though I wasn't going to get rich.

Finally last years, I made the decision to enjoy the rest of my life without any pressures of work. Our daughter is an agent in the same area (though we were dealing with people all over the country) and had spent many more hours traveling than I had. She had so much knowledge, that I decided I didn't need to compete with her or anyone. Yes, as I said, I was experienced but not like she is.

Now, I sit back, watch her company grow, have given her some decent clients and I am enjoying using a travel agent instead of being one.

Well I haven't retired yet.. but I know I need to go as soon as I can...eligible at age 55 in 2 more years...
I work for an Oil Company and here's my thought on my employment:
in my 20's I thought the refinery ran because of me...
in my 30's I thought the refinery ran because of Crude Oil...
In my 40's I figured out it was coffee that ran the place...
Now in my 50's I've figured out that this place runs on pure Bull$hix.........

"Have you had enough? And do you have enough?"
When you can answer "Yes" to both questions.

What organic_donna wrote...simple, but succinct and right on, imo.
I can only rec'd the earlier the better, usually. None of us knows our 'expiration date'.

It was an attractive offer from my wife's employer that made us decide to do it at age 62. Three years earlier then we had planned on.

They offered her early retirement, medical benefits until age 65, and they would hire back on a 1099 for 3 days a week at her same yearly salary. That year gave me time to sell my business

We never looked back.

Also what Organic Donna expressed so well. It caused me to pull the plug two years earlier than planned.

Retire? My friend and I were joking at work the other day, we will be tooling around work in our rollators. We plan on getting different colors.

So that is why you are not retired; your getting rollators?
