Hate to say it but this is getting ridiculous. Sixteen freaking pages over a little shot? Surely we're all mature and intelligent enough to make up our own minds about what's right for us and in the end, isn't that all that matters? But alas, the same thread will resurface again next year at this time with the same lack of consensus and resolution.

Very well said, Mark.

Anyone who wants to get information about the benefits and risks of vaccines should speak with his own doctor. I guarantee s/he knows more about vaccines than anyone with a degree in vaccinology from Google University.

Reliable information can also be obtained from the CDC. If you would like to jump over the Google hits for the anti-vaccine sites and all the anecdotes about someone taking the vaccine and developing a condition that must be due to the vaccine because the vaccine preceded the medical condition, use the PogoFrog search engine. It skips all the anti-science.

There is no gigantic "Big Pharma" conspiracy about vaccines. As drugs go, they are cheap and not very profitable.

Vaccines have saved more lives and prevented more suffering than any other medical intervention ever developed. Like any medication, there can be side effects and very, very rarely serious complications. But for every vaccine we have, the risks of the vaccines are far, far smaller than the risks of the diseases they prevent. Anyone who tries to tell you differently does not know what he's talking about.

Unfortunately many people fail to realize the real risk of influenza because it's the complications that usually result in hospitalization and/or death. These complications - primarily but not limited to cardiac and pulmonary issues - are what end up being reported as the cause of death or hospital admission.

So it's hard to get a grasp on the numbers but every medical professional on the planet agrees that influenza is a major public health threat.

DH and I had our flu shots on Friday. DH got the "seniors shot" and I got the regular shot. DH said it didn't hurt but that the needle seemed very long. He has had no reaction at all. The regular shot didn't cause me any problem. There is a very small bump at the injection site, but no pain or swelling. The worst is the very black bruise I got from where the pharmacist held my arm very tightly!! Guess she thought I was a flight risk!! :-)
