Advertisements

Is anyone familiar with a brand of shoes specially designed for older travelers who like to walk (cities, museums, etc.)? I remember seeing one advertised that had springs in the soles, but I can't find them online.

I'm writing on behalf of an 84-year-old male friend. He exercises regularly and is quite lean and strong for his age, but has foot arthritis and also, due to age, has lost the fat-padding in his feet. He's tried various "cushioning" shoe inserts but says they make his shoes too tight (he wears a 13 Medium).

I'd really like to help him! Anyone know of a walking shoe that really works for folks whose feet just aren't what they used to be?

Thanks!

I have encountered two issues. First most shoes have little in the way of cushioning. I have not found a good solution. Second, most shoes are too narrow and wider widths are not available in stores or online. Moab ventilators seem to have become my standard shoe. The cushioning is OK, definitely not great, but wide sizes are available.

Not sure if this would fit the bill or not, but my BirdsandBlooms magazine always runs ads for Gravity Defyer sneakers. Supposed to be "the Ultimate Shock Absorbing Footwear".

They offer a free pair of orthotic inserts with each show purchase.
Free shipping.
Free returns.
Free exchanges.
Coupon code is MW2FGX9

Phone is 1-800-429-0039
Web: GravityDefyer.com/MW2FGX9

I have no personal experience with these and it looks like you order, try them and return if they don't work out.

Best of luck!

What is wrong with these companies? I checked the Defyer webpage, looked at the first 3 examples of outdoor shoes. Everyone was out of stock in my size: 11W. In addition I have no idea what they mean by "wide." I tried numerous shoes and boots from Timberland and other companies. The wides are a long way from E widths.

I have always worn good shoes. I had to wear orthopedic shoes as a child. Now I have arthritis in my feet and ankles.

I wear crocs There is a good reason why nurses wear them. Wearing the sandal has the added benefit of making me keep my feet well groomed. I wear my ankle supports with them when I feel especially vulnerable, but I can walk a good ways in my crocs without being uncomfortable. I know it sounds horribly unattractive but no one has ever remarked on my ensemble. The ankle supports don't show with a pair of black slacks or leggings.

In cold weather I wear boots sized large enough to hold my braces and orthotics.

Sadly, it sounds like your friend needs to be fitted for a bigger shoe. Good shoes are expensive but so worth the money.

Hmm, I don't live too far from Washington, D.C. I'll have to ask Mr. Obama what brand of shoe he wears, next time I see him.
