Recently went to the fitness center under the Silver Sneakers program through my health insurance. I came back from the pool and i see young boys undressing in my locker area and a guy not there father standing there naked drying off with a towel. In Mo. it is illegal for an adult to allow his genitals be exposed to a minor. I turned a went to take a long shower until the area was clear. How can this be legal?

I don't think anyone thinks anything of it in a gym locker-room setting. There's nothing sexual about showering and drying off after working out.

Intensifying "modesty" in locker rooms is a fairly recent trend , and opinion on this seems to run in cycles. Those of us born before (roughly) 1960, and quite a bit later in some regions, can recall a time when very few men, regardless of age, showed much concern over casual exposure to others of the same sex in a locker room environment.

The law is the law. Is there a provision written to exclude gym locker rooms?

Can you cite this law?

This is not legal advice, but I found this on FindLaw. It looks like simply being naked in a same-sex locker room for purposes of taking a shower or changing clothes would not violate the law. Apparently context is important.

"MRS Section 566.083 - Sexual Misconduct Involving a Child: Exposing one's genitals to a child under 15 years old knowing it will likely alarm them or for the sexual gratification of any person, coercing a child of under 15 to expose their genitals for the sexual gratification of any person including the child, or coercing a girl of less than 15 years old to expose her breasts over the internet or throughother electronic means, such as text, for the sexual gratification of anyone."

Thanks. I understand now.

Disclaimer: I'm female. For whatever reason, I feel I should disclose that.

I don't see an issue if the adult isn't staring at the child, or obviously aroused. I mean they are boys, and they sometimes use a public men's room with a urinal, right? At sports stadiums they make men pee in those big trough-like basins, don't they?

I think the key is that it's not for anyone's sexual gratification, it's just changing clothes or heeding the call of nature. I can't imagine the female corollary... not allowing women to show bare breasts in a locker room. I think I agree with 2nd trick, this modesty in the locker room thing is getting a bit over the top. A locker room is where you are SUPPOSED to get undressed, and shower and dry off. Next they will have to have a bunch of private stalls in the locker room so no one's modesty is offended.

Our locker rooms at our gym do not allow children over the age of 4 of the OPPOSITE GENDER in the men's or women's locker room. And we have an individual "family bathroom", so opposite gender parents can dress their child or take them to the toilet. I think if a parent is concerned they could tell their child to dress in the shower or toilet stall, but they still might be see things. The same things they might see on their own dad, or their skinny-dipping friends.

Are there no nudist resorts in the "Show Me" state?

If he was close to the kids and not the adult there taking care of them, I'd find it strange. If he's clearly just trying to get ready himself, I don't see anything weird about it.

I'm a member of the YMCA and a local health club run by the hospital system. The YMCA gets a lot more children and a bigger cross-section of society. It's common to see kids in the locker room there. The health club run by the hospital system has a more exclusive clientele with fewer kids.
