Seems to be a lot of questions lately on whether or not retirement is really all that great. An incendent at work yesterday makes me say yes.

Yesterday morning my project manager informed us that one of our products is looking promising and work will ramp up in order to get it to what we call fast track (basically we want to hurry up and get it tested so it can move onto TSCA approval). Hey great, that's good news.

A team member informed our boss that she's going to be out 3 days starting the 11 because her husband is having surgery. Well the powers that be got really snarky. After lunch everyone on the project was called into the conference room and given the proverbial talking to. How we must be committed to the project and your committment can't be sincere if your family matters take precendent. exact words.
Average time on the job for this team, 25 years

All time off including death, surgery, child issues must be authorized EVEN if you have the time.
Our coworkerr said our manager came to her at the end of the day and said it was ok if she really had to take off. lol, to which she said, OK or not I will not be here. She told us this morning she's retiring end of this year.

Yep, I have 17 more months of dealing with insensitive management.

Now I'm certain everyone's work place is not like this, one of the downsides of working for a big company but just the fact that I won't have to be made to feel quilty if I need to take a day off is going to be great IMO.

Eliza, at the end of your life you will NEVER regret the time spent with family and close loved ones. You will NEVER be happy you gave that time up for your employer. I feel sorry for those individuals who are in a position that they cannot say no because of fear of losing their job. That’s when you know you are in the wrong job. I’ve been quite fortunate as was my husband. Family was always top priority.

What manager really believes employees will make this project a priority over family managers? I would hope your exit interview is as harsh as that position was.

I think what made us really salty was, 10 secs before they spouted that nonsense, we were pretty excited.
LOL I mean we can connect the dots, a new product launch means meeting one of the corporation goals in revenue. Which means a potential raise next year.

Now they've got 10 scientist walking around salty. Can't wait for todays 10 am powwow.

That is so lame. My former employers were actually pretty good about giving workers personal time. That said, I'm more confused that there is a question about "retirement being great". What is not great about not working?

A manager that said that to employees at our company would likely not be a manager anymore. If anyone tries to abuse their position they would be escorted out the door.

As with everything, there are those who see cons for it but equally those that see the pros.

very true and I'll admit that even as time goes by I've probably flip flopped on each side. I do notice the difference in my enthusiasm (sp?). I do think when I was younger I was more "gung-ho". I did read many American workers leave tons of vacation days and sick days on the table because we're afraid to use them for fear of looking like a "slacker"

I'm looking forward to that no longer being an issue.

If they want dedication let them hire cheaper and younger and watch the project blow up in smoke.
