Uh oh, here's another list but a short one. If you love the beach and aren't deterred by the possibility of hurricanes, these towns might be worth looking into. The beach life isn't for me, but someone else might be interested.

If I ever were to agree to go back to Florida (which I doubt), I would absolutely consider Ft. Pierce and Pensacola.
Never Mississipi, and never Corpus Christi. The gulf coast of FL is probably my number one US beach area, and Pensacola gets rave reviews from my friends. I remember Ft. Pierce from many years ago - it was always nice.

That's what I thought too until I looked up that town in Mississippi on the beach. It looks pretty nice, with lots of amenities, low crime and not too far from New Orleans. If you can forget you're in Mississippi it's not looking bad at all.

Ah yes, Ft Pierce brings back memories. I managed a tire store near the downtown area in 1989-90. It was a bit of a unique experience due to the area. Every evening at closing, we released two very mean dogs to roam the building. Had one customer buy about $1500 worth of wheels and tires for his new truck. When he came back to pick it up and pay, he walked in with a briefcase and asked if we could go back to my office. Popped it open back there and it was full of cash; all ones, fives and tens. I looked at him with a straight face and said "I guess you must have a paper route"? We both got a good laugh about that and started counting.

I've got some friends who live near there and we visited last March. Ft Pierce has done a pretty good job of making itself more attractive. I still prefer Vero Beach where I lived (about 15 miles north), but if someone chose the area carefully, Ft Pierce would be a nice place for retirement for someone who wanted to be near the beach. Ft. Pierce Inlet and the Indian River are great for fishing, if a retiree is interested in doing that.

But, ONE house DID survive the recent Mexico Beach direct hit. (I't is possible if you build it correctly)

These are certainly nice towns for a budget retirement, but I'm not sure how these homes allow you to retire on $40K a year. If that's your budget, you're not going to be buying. Rents are in the $1000-1500 range, which doesn't give you all that much for insurance, food, and the cost of living. I suppose if you were really frugal, you could pull it off.

I wouldn't want to retire to low-rent areas.
