This article talks about the effect of walking on brain size and general health as we age.

Honestly, I'm surprised we know so much about staving off mental and physical problems and do so little about it, as a society.

What is your routine to stay vibrant and healthy?

I walk 3 miles every morning and then whatever the day brings.
It's also my morning meditation ...I zone out and listen to music and look at nature.

Ahhh, I love that. My own morning routine is close to yours. The mental aspects you mention are one of the best parts.

I've picked up tennis, 99% doubles and much of it mixed. Good exercise, very mentally stimulating and social. Morning matches are pretty low level, fun without extreme competition.

If your joints, especially knees, are in decent shape I'd recommend it. Find a club, pay the dues and jump in. They will probably have clinics and group play.. One study I saw said tennis players live 7 years longer than other exercisers.

I walk a total of 6 miles per day, with two short sessions with our dogs and, in the morning, one 4 mile walk with my partner in a huge, climate-controlled mall nearby. There is a community of many fellow seniors that join us there every day.

I've always wondered about mall walking. Did you measure your walk yourself or does the mall have a route laid out for people with measured walk stations from beginning to end?

Someone measured it with a wheel-type device. We also confirmed that one lap is over one mile by the time it takes.

The friendships that have developed with the other mall walkers over the years is really cool!

The social aspects are a super plus to this activity!

I do about an hour of mobility and flexibility movements every morning after waking up and go to the gym to workout with the free weights two or three times a week and use the treadmill.
