I have read many opinions from older people who said what they DON'T want or need regarding a material gift, but I can't remember reading a column about what gifts they would like.

So, leaving out "warm and fuzzy" non-material gifts such as "my family with me at Christmas" or "world peace", or something like "all my bills to be paid in full" or "a new car would be nice", what would you appreciate as a gift that would cost less than $100? (That figure is arbitrary, btw -- I just put that in because that is the maximum that I would spend on a gift for a relative.)

Great ideas! I would appreciate all of those myself!

A round of golf with my friend/neighbor, $100 would just about cover the cost.

I always have a great time.

Socks. I walk a lot, and go through a lot of socks, they just develop holes very rapidly. Black socks +/- some kind of pattern on them.

Otherwise truly nothing; I have a very small condo which is clogged with stuff (mostly books and media discs) and I have nowhere to put any new gifts. Plus I already have everything I ever wanted.

A food gift of some sort. What sort depends on the person. Do they like cheese, fruit, etc. I once sent a friend who was from a predominantly Jewish town in NJ but had moved to DC a gift of real bagels from Brooklyn with cream cheese and black-and-white cookies because she missed them. She could only find supermarket bagels there.

One sibling and I have sort of pinned this down to food treats the other can't get where they live. Hardly ever have other material things in mind and don't need more stuff. Good gifts for me include a few Trader Joe's treats. No stores up here and they don't do mail order. Obviously, you can find secondary retailers online but you won't find temperature stable perishables. Living where I do, relatives/friends can be coaxed into taking pity on me more readily .

In return, I give locally caught varieties of canned/smoked salmon from a small custom fish packer. Can't stand the stuff myself as I've been forced to subsist on it once too many times. If it isn't smoked, diluted with lots of cream cheese, and spread on just the right delivery system (for the uninitiated that's a cracker) I don't want it.

SO knows perfectly how to hit the nail on the head.
A bad day at work - gummi worms and a bottle of prosecco on my desk the next morning.
Weatherman warns of a cold snap - shearling slippers bedside (correct size and color)
Kitchen marathon - my favorite knife had a twin two days later and a slot in the knife drawer
Cravings - a box of De Checco Catavappi - 24 packages
Disaster truck in the purse department - my all time favorite purse died of old age. Mandarina Duck Hera. SO found one in Italy. It got stuck in US customs. He knows now that ebony is not black. I now have one in ebony and one in black.
Two days ago I asked for specific serving spoons. The box came with salad servers, ladles, the works.

For Katharsis:
My manager told me to move my car. ??? SO was in the parking lot, had going out clothes for me in the car and Nutcracker tickets. A brief appearance by Baryshnikov.
