There are mentally ill in every state but I don't think RI is at the top of the list. I never saw or felt the effects or prescence of the mentally ill in society in RI like I see here in Oregon. The thousands of mentally ill homeless that roam the streets here in Portland is beyond sad and alarming. Thats just one segment of the mentally ill here, and I never saw that in Providence to the extent I see here.
Believe me when I say whatever percentage RI has in the mentally ill dept, could be nothing compared to Oregon. Mental Illness is much more noticeable in the population here, as are the use of anti depressants, sedatives, drugs and the very high suicide rate. Again RI has problems but whatever source gives RI the number 1 rating for mental illness, needs to visit some other states.

or RI does a good job dealing with then than Oregon.
It doesn't say anything about why they keep voting in the worst politicians in the country; but it might be a clue to the problem with many RI drivers.
People who have access to doctors get more medications of all kinds. RI has close to the best access in the country and the best reporting system for diseases. People are not crazier here or sicker here, they get diagnosed and medicated more often.
Why do you think Asperger's and ADHD is so prevalent? It's diagnosis diagnosis diagnosis...
There was a interesting incident that happened once- can't remember off the top of my head where or when, but it was about a population who suddenly lost their access to doctors. The death rate dropped during that period!!!!
RI also has higher rates of substance abuse than other states. Don't forget vagrancy laws are different in the Northwest, they have more rights to congregate so are more visible. But then again mental illness isn't measured by homelessness.
More substance abusers and more alcoholics per capita in RI? Please don't repeat things like this when you don't understand how the numbers are arrived at.
You know- Lies, damn lies, and statistics.
It is easy to take surveys in RI and get high numbers because the population is small. You could easily anonymously survey, for example, all high school seniors, and get high rates of compliance which then would indicate high percentages. Plus, no one is worried about reporting anything here since it is a very loose and tolerant state not dominated by religion (or law enforcement for that matter).
And, if there are such high rates of alcoholism, RIers sure don't drink and drive much, because we have one of the lowest traffic fatality rates in the entire US.
Wow, this subject caught me by suprise. When I saw "We're finally number 1", I thought for sure this thread would be about unemployment, or tax burdens, or illegal immigrants, or maybe even former politicians who are under indictment or imprisoned. Oh well, I'm sure those will be along soon enough.
