I am an MA resident and worked a little in Rhode Island in 2014. Literally a total of $220.93 paid and $8.29 was taken for RI state tax. Am I still required to do my taxes for RI when the amount is so small. I know it's getting a little back, but just seems a huge pain to do it all and RI doesn't have a way to do it electronically that I can see. I'm new at doing my own taxes so filling out the forms might be a bit new to me.

If you have been a Mass resident for the entirety of 2014, you only file in Mass. regardless where your income comes from. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, no. You file with whatever state collected your taxes. This is from personal experience. Lived in RI, worked in CT. Had to file in both. Live in NV, worked in RI. Had to file with RI (NV has no income tax) I am not sure what the dollar amount needs to be, though. I would recommend checking with your accountant.

I'm going to second Raiderman. IM that is definitely wrong.

I lived in Mass, worked in RI. You pay and file taxes first with RI, then file and pay with Mass. You get credit for whatever you paid to RI with Mass.

Whether you have to file with RI if you are getting a refund, I think that is a question for either the RI Division of Taxation or your accountant. Rhode Island, or any other state, isn't going to be in a hurry to return your money if it is owed to you. But whether that puts you at greater or lesser risk of an audit is a different question to which I don't know the answer. And if you are technically due money back from RI, does that impact what you claim credit for with Mass?

Stand corrected.

I think the real question is does he have to file in RI for $8.29. There may be a threshold below which one doesn't file at all- sure the tax people could say very quickly.

It's how much he earned, not how much was withheld by RI. I wouldn't be surprised if one didn't have to file, if they earned only $220.

I agree the amount seems trivial. But if they want advice, in this case, I think they need to seek guidance from those in the field.
