Wallethub usually beats Rhode Island up. I guess we have to start advising differently on this forum.

I do love an optimist. U.S. News & World Report disagrees though and ranks the Ocean State at a much more believable 33rd. Hang your hat on it though, you people need all the hope you can find.

Interesting how RI ranks higher than MA in Economic Environment.

You have to wonder if RI's proximity to #1 Massachusetts is a factor.

In the interest of fairness, the Bay State at number 1 strikes me as equally preposterous. USNWR places it at number 9. While 9 and 33 respectively seems more credible, even this is likely to be overly generous. I dunno, maybe a Northeast bias.

I'm not surprised that Ri would rank high for short commute times, shorter work week, higher wages and benefits. It's a union state.

Try working in the deep south and see what's on offer. There's your Northeast bias explanation.

Texas had the highest median starting salary, Vermont had the lowest. Virginia has the highest median income, New York had the lowest.

And my advice to all: don't overthink it. Just shut up and enjoy the moment. Dubious authenticity or not, tiny Rhode Island, the perennial basement dweller has cracked the top ten of a national ranking. ANY ranking! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to check and see if Hell has frozen over.

You can't trust places like Wallethub (buzzfeed, nerdwallet, etc. etc.). Very little research goes into the lists and they are mostly written as clickbait. Mass is #1, so I guarantee you the author has a connection at the Boston Globe that will link to her article. She most likely has a contact at Projo that will write about the article too for mentioning RI at #10. The Wallethub team is probably frantically calling up news and radio stations in the top ranked states saying "Look, we ranked you guys high! Please mention us on your show!"

Agreed, actually. The Bay State has no more business at number one than the Ocean State has at number 10.
