to make trash bags for people in Pawtucket to buy to do "pay as you throw" and someone on the city council is actually considering it??????!!!!

This kind of thing drives me nuts.

First, pay as you throw means the city of Pawtucket- a poor city- will be strewn with garbage as people dump excess garbage out their car windows

and second- if you want bag manufacturers- RI has plenty of bag and box makers instead of sending tax dollars out of state.

Bag plan aims to lessen trash, up revenue for Pawtucket - Projo 7 to 7 News Blog | Rhode Island news | The Providence Journal (http://newsblog.projo.com/2010/01/hold-83.html - broken link)

The "pay as you go" is a terrible idea- they've floated it here in Coventry-politicians see dollar signs, though, without considering the fact that people are going to start dumping stuff in lieu of paying for disposal.
I already pay taxes for what? Snow plowing, the police (who mostly run speed traps to make money for the town) and trash removal. Fire taxes are seperate here. Paying extra for trash removal is a bad idea.

Re: the article, what do you want to bet someone, somewhere, would get some <ahem> "personal consideration" if they pass that scheme?

I used to live in surburban Chicago, and I think you got 2 barrels a week (for a single-family house), and if you had more trash than that, you'd buy tags (for $3/apiece or something like that) and you could put those on extra trash bags.

I'd like it if they just gave you a clearer idea of what you had to do, to get your trash picked up. Last week, I put several pieces of wood and glass in my trash barrel -- the Providence web site said that with big pieces of glass, not to recycle them but to "carefully place them in your regular trash barrel." OK, so I did that -- these were thick pieces of glass that were shelves, I think, in some old piece of furniture that was disassembled.

They didn't pick them up -- left that barrel untouched -- last week. This week, they appear to have emptied part of the barrel, but still left some of the stuff. I'm not sure what's still in the barrel, why they didn't take it, and what I have to do now.

(I've had about enough of Cicilline and his feel-good enviro initiatives that don't accomplish anything....)

I hear you- big tax dollars and now crappy service. They seem to be extremely particular now- taxpayer be damned.

They left my yard waste out so I went to "ask Daisy" apparently She has all the answers- and found out that they don't pick up yard waste anymore before April!!!! City of Providence - Providence Recycling Office (http://www.providenceri.com/green/ask.php - broken link)

I'm quite unhappy about all this too since garbage pickup was something that Providence did well compared to other cities.
