I am a 24 year old grad student who will be attending a Masters program at the MVC campus starting in August. I have been trying to research areas in Richmond that would be best suited for me, however I am a bit overwhelmed! I will be studying and working during the week, however I definitely enjoy going to bars, restaurants, and clubs on the weekend. Would like to be relatively close to the MVC campus. I obviously dont want to live in an area flooded with undergrads, but I dont want to live in a quiet, professional area either. I also would like to be close to grocery stores, cafes, a gym, etc. Is the Fan the best place? How about Church Hill, Carytown, Shockoe Bottom, or Downtown?
Thanks for the help!

The Fan, Shockoe Bottom or Downtown are all good choices.

The Fan is nice, but furthest from MCV.
Downtown is nice but not really near a grocery store.
Shockoe Bottom has plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs and has a grocery store and is pretty close to MCV.

Downtown and Shockoe Bottom are pretty mixed demographically but they'll probably have less undergrads because they are more expensive. It's more grad students and young professionals.

The Fan is really diverse and some pockets have exclusively undergrads (Hell Block on Grace St, for example), while some areas have significantly less undergrads.

Church Hill is nice too, but I've found that Church Hill is a little more quiet (in the nice parts) than any of the other neighborhoods. There are some good restaurants there, though. And it's not too far from Downtown or Shockoe Bottom that you couldn't visit.

That sums it up up pretty well. Though I wouldn't worry about commute from museum or fan to Mcv - it's less then 10 minutes, max

Fan/carytown/museum/Byrd park are the same neighborhood really, to all intents and purposes.
