Hey all, OP here with an update. Both parents are interested in moving by next year, but they are only interested in North Carolina at this time. As much as I'd like to see RVA be given a fair shot, I'm doubtful that it's going to happen. I'd like to thank you all for your help. If a moderator could close this, that would be appreciated.

Instead of starting a new thread I'll see if I can resurrect this one.
Husband and I are empty nesters from Upstate Western NY. This area is more midwesten than what most think of when they hear of NY. Rural, laid back, small city, friendly people. I honestly don't mind living here except for the winters and taxes.
We've been discussing relocating but to other places ( I fell in love with Greenville, SC) however husband has been interviewing with a Richmond based company so I've been reading everyone's feedback. I think my biggest concern in some things I've read on other forums is that it's an unfriendly place and hard to make friends. Most of our friends here in NY are from the connections we made through the kids activities but now that they're all gone I'm worried I'll be lonely and regret the move. I know a lot of meeting new people will be on me, but how open and receptive are people to transplants?
I think what is important to me as well is that that city is friendly, easily accessble, clean and safe. I know it was pretty crime ridden when my daughter looked at VCU years ago. How much has changed?
Any other more recent info would be wonderful!

I'm not sure where Richmond being an unfriendly place comes from. I think Richmond is a very friendly city. There are very different areas of the city and surrounding counties that can fit any taste.

The city is going through a major renaissance right now with many younger people moving to the city. If you go back to the late 80's and early 90's Richmond was a mess. It's not even the same city any more. I feel safe downtown and VCU area is night and day better then it was even 8+ years ago.

It seems like construction in every corner with something new. there are some beautiful areas of the city depending on budget (and if you have kids that have to send to private school past elementary age). There are some amazing suburban areas and neighborhoods as well that are very affordable and have great schools.

You really need to visit Richmond to appreciate it. Let us know more about what your looking for in an area to live and we could better recommend. I moved hear (although my wifes family has always been here) 6 years ago and love it.

Richmond is a friendly place to my mind. I moved here from Boston.

City used to be full of crime. Lots have changed, now its hip and hot, and crime isn't really an issue.

HI. So did you're family move from NJ to VA or NC? I am thinking of moving too so have been looking at what people have to say about VA... If you have moved, how is it where you're at?

Thanks.
