In this day and age when so much of our goods come from overseas I thought it was worth mentioning that one Virginia company is still making furniture locally.

Vaughan-Bassett in lovely little Galax is working hard to keep Americans working.

In fact, it is predicted that by the end of this year Vaughan-Bassett will be the largest wooden bedroom furniture manufacturer in the US!

I recently visited the Maurice Vaughan Showroom (610 E. Stuart Dr. in Galax) and found great prices and beautiful pieces. I am very excited to be spending my money on an American-made product.

I would highly recommend that anyone in the market for furniture check out Vaughan-Bassett. As we celebrate the 4th of July this weekend I'd like to salute a company that is keeping jobs right here at home in Virginia.

Here are some examples of furniture I found - all made in Galax:

What a rare find! I am still amazed when I shop for furniture how much of the cheap Chinese junk you have to put together, so I just don't buy it!
Do you think any of the cheap junk we buy today will have any "antique" value 25 years from now? That is if the stuff makes it 25 years!
I have seen some local wood products made by the Dunkard Church of the Brethren who are great craftsmen who are also farmers, also the Amish.

Agee about the Chinese junk that passes for furniture these days.

It's interesting to note that more and more Mennonites are settling in southwest Virginia and bringing with them their woodworking/cabinetry skills. I know of one Mennonite builder that builds a real solid home

A friend of mine who lives in Harrisonburg took me to several Mennonite stores in the area. I can't remember where they were located but I was impressed with all of the hand made furniture, crafts and especially produce they were selling. It was a lot of fun to be there! I especially liked the freshly baked items for sale.
