Hi there! I will be relocating to Roanoke in June of this year, I'm looking for advice on the best areas to live. I'm looking for safe, good elementary/middle school and as affordable as possible. I have a solid income so if the area is not as affordable I will still consider for the sake of location and my daughter's education. I would also prefer suburban to rural feel. We will be renting for a year and then I will be buying after, I'm hoping to keep her in the same school zone during that time. Any advice offered would be great!

I'm also a little worried about making friends and establishing a support system for us, any advice there? We will not have any family within about 100 miles so developing new friendships will be critically important for both of us.

I'm looking forward to joining the Roanoke community soon!

I’m sure others will chime in with a response however, based on your criteria, I’m guessing the Cave Spring of Roanoke is where you would want to be. It’s a suburban area, very close to downtown Roanoke and the school district is top notch. I believe there are a bunch of rentals in this area as well.

Regarding friends, that should be a breeze for you since you will have a daughter in school and parents with school age children are very engaging. Besides that, people in Roanoke are generally very friendly and helpful.

Hi!! Nice to meet you! I agree you should make friends easy with a daughter in school. Our family moved from Charlotte, NC to the Cave Spring area about 4 years ago and we love love love the area. (Our zip code is 24018 area for your search)

Before moving to this area we did an extensive search on the school systems as well. For us coming from Charlotte where the public school system was not good, it was our top priority. Especially since our youngest at the time was still in High school however, she also was coming from a great private school. I was happy to discover the CS area to be one of the best public schools.

I think what made our transition easy is she's into sports. So we found programs the summer before school started and was able to made lots of friends before school started. June is a good time to come before summer starts. There are several area pools you can try and join to meet people. Best of luck with your search and feel free to message me anytime.

Back Creek is our area Elementary and I've heard wonderful things!
Cave Spring Elementary
Penn Forrest
Clear Brook (I'm unsure if this is Cave Spring?)

You can see them all on the Roanoke County school website https://www.rcps.us/

Note that both Cave Spring Middle School AND Hidden Valley Middle School are considered the Cave Spring area - and as noted most have the 24018 zip.

Clearbrook and Back Creek Elementaries both feed into Cave Spring or Hidden Valley but are largely rural and less “suburban.” There are several apartment options in 24018.

William Byrd and Northside middle schools also have a lot of housing options.

The boundaries between Roanoke City, Roanoke County and Salem can be convoluted so make sure you know where you are!

Salem schools are also highly regarded!

I don't think Roanoke City would be your choice based on your criteria but I am gonna make another post about Roanoke City schools.

The Bonsack area is also a good area to look at. We relocated here two and a half years ago and have been very happy with our decision.

Bonsack & the Cloverdale area are both nice places to live. Plenty of good choices for food and other everyday shopping needs, 9 miles from Downtown Roanoke, close to Daleville and many nice residential neighborhoods.

Definitely an area to consider!

Bonsack is interesting as the county line (and school line) cut right through neighborhoods.

And even some Roanoke city neighborhoods are very close to Bonsack!

Just be aware in case you have a school preference - don’t assume!
