People are very proud of the schools in the Cave Spring area - Cave Spring HS and Hidden Valley HS - but yeah it’s not a “town.” It is suburban part of Roanoke County!

Cave Spring is a rather affluent suburban area of Roanoke County- 'Southwest County' as it's often called. Very good schools and convenient to everything.

My wife and I are researching retirement in one of the old established neighborhoods within a mile or so from downtown Roanoke. Just wanted to update these posts, as Roanoke, itself, has 100,000 residents. Some comments had it as several times larger. My daughter and her husband live in a ranch-style home in Cave Spring and love the community. Cave Spring is also rated extremely high for liveability in Virginia

Good hunting to the thread originators!

Poster might have meant the Roanoke Region which is around 300,000. You have Roanoke City (not part of the County) with 100k, Roanoke County with around 100k as well, Salem City around 25k and then a few suburban/ rural counties such as Franklin, Boutetourt, etc that bring up the regional population to that number.

Hope you find the right place! Mrs Watchful and I pre-retired here in 2013 (at age 57) and moved into our retirement home last year!

It's just that I am in a place in my life where crowds no longer excite me. Not that they ever did but I lived in a crowded area for years. There are plenty of reasons to like that area. Heading north I really like Lexington for all its history but it may not be large enough for what you need. Sports is important for this area but I cannot address the leagues or schools and their particular sports. Much smaller population than Salem at around 7000 in Lexington. Christiansburg, which was just mentioned, is along the size of Salem but without Roanoke attached. It's a nice area and has grown a lot over the recent years.

Great information! Thank you!

Hi! After living in many places across the U.S., (including Shoreline, Edmonds and Lynnwood, WA), we decided to move to Roanoke in 2016 after many, many hours of research. We live in the Bonsack area and we love it! Our kids really enjoy William Byrd Middle/High School.
